Equine photography – Capturing the bond between a girl and her horse

For me, one of the delights of my job is capturing love in photographs. You see in it in the glances between grooms and their new brides, between mothers and their children, and, like this recent shoot, between girls and their horses. I visited Buckinghamshire recently to photograph Holly with her mare Heidi. I found Holly at the stables where she spends much of her time tending to Heidi. Holly is a typically horse-mad girl, with a gorgeous natural, fresh complexion and infectious smile and the brief for this equine photography was simple, Holly just wanted some pictures with her beloved friend.

The light near the stable wasn’t great so I suggested that we walk along the lane running behind the stable, which provided the perfect rural backdrop. With equine photography the subjects aren’t always willing, but a few carrots can act as a great incentive, and Heidi came around to the idea of modelling, at least until the sound of some nearby pigs put her off. The beauty of horses never fails to make me catch my breath, and Heidi was no different. I loved seeing the pair together, and the trust and bond between them.

We arranged the viewing for soon after the shoot while I was still in the area, and after some deliberation Holly pinned down her favourite four images to create a beautiful multi- aperture frame which was included as part of her collection.
